LEVIATHAN
By David Wise
On the ocean planet of Rilose, underwater mining operations have been attacked by a giant whale called Leviathan. Mighty Orbots is sent to assist.
Upon arriving, the Orbots are greeted by Torkus, the head of mining operations, and Amon, the operations oceanographer. Amon hides little feeling towards the Orbots capabilities in this situation. He doubts a great deal that they will have any success dealing with this giant whale. The Orbots feel otherwise, until they are shown a video of the beast at work, destroying launch platforms, freighter ships and submarines. This is one BIG whale!
Torkus suggests that the Orbots should hitch a ride with one of the operation’s automated freighter subs, since these are what the whale seems to be attacking the most. Amon still lets the Orbots know his opinion as they depart. He doesn’t really like the Orbots, and the feeling is nearly mutual.
The sub arrives at the launch platform used to send Rilose ore to the rest of the galaxy. The trip was rather boring. No sign of this Leviathan. The Orbots go top side to watch the unloading operations.
Meanwhile, in a hidden underwater base, a small one-man sub pops up in a docking bay. It is Amon. He heads into a operations room, puts on a cerebro-helmet, and activates his “pet.” Leviathan moves off.
At the launch platform, the Orbots are still guarding rock. Then, what looks like another freighter sub at first comes over the horizon. But a quick zoom in on an optic scanner shows that it is Leviathan, and it is coming in fast! Rob orders “Orbots, UNITE!”
As soon at they complete the transformation, the massive robot is shown just what massive REALLY is. Leviathan dwarfs Mighty Orbots. The mighty multibot isn’t even half the size of one of Leviathan’s quad shaped tail fins! And any attempts to persuade the beast to let the machinery at the launch platform alone only riles the whale. Leviathan knocks Mighty Orbots away like a little toy. It then proceeds to punch a hole in the freighter sub and damage a starship freighter.
At the underwater base, Amon sees the damage Leviathan has done to the starship freighter. It’s going to explode! He orders Leviathan out of the area. The beast complies, leaving a beaten Mighty Orbots behind questioning whether this was really a good idea coming here in the first place! Rob orders a separation, then has the Orbots clean up the mess at the landing platform while he and Ono chase after Leviathan.
Ono scans Leviathan. She finds that a signal is being beamed to the creature. Someone is controlling Leviathan! As soon as the Orbots are finished their tasks, they begin to follow the beam back to its source, which has to be Amon! Only he has the knowledge to do this sort of thing. Rob reports to Torkus his findings.
Back at the mining operations center, Torkus is delighted. He informs Rob that he will join them shortly. As he shuts down the com link, he turns on another, and Umbra comes up on the screen!
As the Orbots close on their destination, they find that they are being followed by Leviathan! Or are they being herded? Possibly, since they soon see a doorway opening in front of them. Properly shunted into the door, Leviathan moves off. The Orbots continue into the base.
Amon greets them. He explains that he has good reason for what he and Leviathan have been doing. Torkus is really a Shadow agent! The mining operation is a sham, put on by Torkus as a cover for his real reason for stripping the ocean’s floor. He is searching for the Solar Sphere, an orb that contains the power of a sun! When Torkus found the sphere, Leviathan promptly swallowed the orb. Now Torkus is using the Orbots as a way to retrieve the sphere for Umbra, who wants it to power his war machine!
The Orbots are beside themselves. Working for UMBRA!? No way! But while they are grasping what they have just been told, Torkus arrives behind them holding a staff. He points the staff at the helmet that Amon has in his hands. A tractor beam yanks it away from the oceanographer. He them fires a burst at the floor, creating a smoke screen to hide his escape. (Continuity problem: The Orbots are shown gagging and blinded by the gas - as is Rob and Amon - Now, if they fly through the vacuum of space, swim through water, and many other strange atmospheres [or lack there of], WHAT ARE THEY DOING!? CHASE THE BUM ALREADY!!)
Using the helmet, Torkus enters Leviathan in his protected space pod. In hot pursuit, the Orbots follow him into the behemoth. But will they be able to get out again? And if they can, will they be able to stop Torkus from delivering the Solar Sphere to Umbra?
