THE DREMLOKS
By Michael Reaves
The paradise world of Idilla comes under the scrutiny of Umbra, as the evil computer scans energite ore on the planet - an essential element need for its conquest of the galaxy. Umbra sends a ship full of Shadow Drones to survey the planet, and to enslave the local inhabitants, the Dremloks (which, surprise - surprise, look remotely like Ewoks!). These forest dwellers have strong telepathic capabilities, as well as some powers over the elements. Umbra has the drones capture all the Dremloks, and place a cerebro-control disk on each.
Days later, we find Mighty Orbots on a mission to deliver a new energy scanner Rob developed to a deep space science station. Rondu calls. He tells Rob that scanners report Shadow activity in the area of Idilla. Mighty Orbots heads in to investigate.
While tinkering with the energy scanner, it starts to go wild, reading an energy source on Idilla, a planet known for not having any known power sources other than natural occurring ones. It’s a mystery that must be solved. He has the Orbots separate, then sends them in groups to search the planet for any signs of unusual activity. It isn’t long before they find some.
First Bort and Crunch, then Tor, Bo and Boo are captured by the Dremloks when they use their mind powers to override their central processors. They take the hypnotized Orbots to their energite mines.
While using the scanner to find the energy source, Rob and Ono spoke a terrified Dremlok. The Dremlok tells Rob that Shadow has captured his people. Rob takes the Dremlok on board the Beam Car, and continues his search. But just as they take off, they are chased by a Shadow Drone. Rob, following the scanners signals, dives the Beam Car into the maul of a dormant volcano, closely followed by the drone. With some fancy twists and turns, he manages to get the drone to crash into a stalagmite. But, as they land at the base of the cave, they are surrounded by Dremloks. And just like the ones approaching the Beam Car, the one he picked up has an evil grin and red glowing eyes. Not good. And along the walls, Rob sees his Orbots mining energite in their trance like state. Can Rob and Ono escape being hypnotized, and free not only the Orbots, but the Dremloks as well? And while they are at it, how about stopping that Shadow space ship in orbit, that is overloading itself, from blowing up the planet?
